Panathinaikos have overcome their biggest challenge yet after coming from behind to defeat PAOK at “Toumba”, continuing their phenomenal start to the season as they go six points clear in first.

The “Trifylli” beat the Double-headed eagle of the North 1-2 away on Monday morning (AEDT) in the most anticipated fixture of the Greek Super League’s sixth round.

PAOK controlled all of the first half and managed to go one goal ahead after midfielder Douglas Augusto’s pass nutmegged defender Bart Schenkeveld to reach Nelson Oliveira, with the striker guiding the ball into the bottom right (18’).

The Greens started the second half far better than the first, equalising in the 51st minute after a Ruben Perez long ball released winger Aitor Cantalapiedra, who dribbled past goalkeeper Dominik Kotarski and hit the ball into an empty net.

Aitor then stepped up again for the league leaders, burying a VAR-awarded penalty into the bottom left (73’) to grab his seventh goal of the campaign and secure a huge three points.

AEK recorded an impressive 4-1 victory against Ionikos on Tuesday morning in a highly successful debut at the newly refurbished Agia Sophia Stadium.

Enosi midfielder Mijat Gacinovic marked the occasion with a brilliant opening goal in the 6th minute, striking the ball from just outside of the box and curling it into the bottom right, before winger Levi Garcia’s header from close range doubled their advantage (26’).

Captain Sergio Araujo had his effort deflected in to make it three (62’), with Gacinovic smacking the ball in on the volley from a cross minutes later for his second goal of the match (65’).

The Nikaia team managed to find a late consolation through substitute Christos Eleftheriadis, who finished off a one-on-one chance into the bottom left in the last minute of the contest (90+3’).

A hat-trick from Nikos Karelis helped Panetolikos to a huge 1-4 away triumph at the expense of Giannina.

The Agrinio outfit went ahead early, thanks to a composed finish into the bottom right by winger Jonathan Morsay, before Karelis bagged his first of the game with a simple tap-in (26’).

The Epirus-based club halved the deficit via a corner header from Rodrigo Erramuspe (34’) but Karelis eventually restored their two-goal lead with a side-footed effort into the bottom right following a free kick (71’).

The Greek marksman completed his hat-trick with a finish that went over the goalkeeper and into the bottom left corner (87’).

Olympiacos bounced back from last round’s loss to earn a 2-0 victory over Atromitos at “Karaiskakis”, thanks to a brace from striker Cedric Bakambu.

The Piraeus club had a golden opportunity to go in front after being awarded a penalty but goalkeeper Andreas Gianniotis dived to his right to save Youssef El Arabi’s strike.

The hosts were soon awarded another opportunity from the spot, with Bakambu stepping up this time to smack the ball into the bottom left corner (45+2’), before the Congolese forward sealed the result with a calm one-on-one finish again into the bottom left (68’).

Volos caused a huge upset, downing Aris 2-0 at home to register their second win over a Greek giant this term.

Winger Milos Deletic gave the Magnesia side the lead when he headed in a bouncing ball in the box (26’) and his teammate Jean Barrientos soon made it two when he converted his spot-kick (30’).

Aris was given an opportunity to get back in the game when Volos defender Nikolai Alho was handed a straight red (55’) but they were unable to capitalise on the extra man advantage.

Asteras Tripolis triumphed 2-0 over OFI at home on Sunday evening, dominating the first half with goals from Leo Tilica (19’) and Michael Gardawski (44’) to bag their first win of the season.

Lamia earned a much-needed 1-0 victory against Levadiakos on Sunday morning, with striker Richmond Boakye scoring from a corner (61’) to hand the Fthiotida outfit their maiden win this term.
