Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese issued a dedicated message for the 82nd anniversary of the landmark day of 28 October, 1940.
On the occasion of ‘OXI’ Day, the PM praised the Greek people, their courage and contribution to victory in WWII.
“On Oxi Day, I join with Australia’s Greek community to remember and honour an act of defiance that reverberated around the world on 28 October 1940,” Mr Albanese said.”We recognise Greece’s refusal to compromise as a moment that heralded Allied victory in the Second World War. But it was also the first chapter in a story of conflict and oppression bringing such suffering to the Greek people.
As we mark Oxi Day, we remember that the fortitude and sacrifices of the men and women of 1940 was a stride towards the freedom Greece enjoys today.
Many postwar Greek migrants to Australia brought with them the memory of Oxi Day, and the ensuing trauma of war. Their courage and determination was the bedrock on which they built new lives in a new land. Our nation continues to be enriched by the strength, history and heritage of a vibrant Greek community. Oxi Day celebrates standing up for what is right and good, even in the face of adversity. In our pursuit freedom, the inspiring struggle of 1940 reminds us we must dedicate ourselves to do all we can to keep peace in our world.”
