Melbourne City secure a huge success over Perth to jump back into first place in a blockbuster round which witnessed 26 goals all up.

The reigning premiers dominated their opponents with a 4-0 win in the A-League’s fifth round, with crosstown rivals Melbourne Victory following suit in their demolition of Arthur Papas’ Newcastle side.

Western United fell to Adelaide in another goal fest while Western Sydney suffered a major home loss at the hands of the Mariners.

Brisbane recorded their maiden win of the season against Sydney FC, as did Wellington in their home triumph over Macarthur FC.

Western Utd-Adelaide Utd 2-4

The Reds extended the current champions’ troubles with a comfortable away upset on Sunday afternoon, moving to third on the ladder in the process.

The South Australians went into the break three goals up through Hiroshi Ibuski’s corner header (9′), captain Craig Goodwin (22′) and an own goal from centre half Leo Lacroix (31′).

The hosts managed to get one back via midfielder Nicolas Milanovic (53′) before winger Ben Halloran restored the three-goal lead for Adelaide (79′).

Western forward Lachlan Wales had his penalty saved by a diving Joe Gauci (83′) but substitute Dylan Pierias popped up late to give the home side a consolation goal (90+1).

Playmaker James Troisi played the first half in his side’s losing effort.

Brisbane Roar-Sydney FC 3-1

The Queenslanders have finally got their first win on the board after a successful home outing over the Sydney giants.

Star striker Charlie Austin put the Roar ahead (6′) before having his penalty saved by Andrew Redmayne, though teammate Carlo Armiento scored in the aftermath (12′).

Midfielder Anthony Caceres halved the deficit for the Sky Blues (39′) but substitute Josh Brindell-South would eventually restore their two-goal cushion with a fantastic long shot into the top left (72′).

Midfielder Paolo Retre was given a straight red (81′) to cap off a poor display for the visitors.

Sydney manager Steve Corica was unhappy with their “sloppy” start but did admire the spirit they showed to get back into the contest

“They showed very good character in the end to come back, get the goal and put them under pressure until (they scored) the third goal and then it was done and dusted,” Mr Corica said to media post-match.

Wellington Phoenix-Macarthur FC 4-1

A second half blitz saw the New Zealanders take home their first three points of the season in a thrilling clash for their home faithful.

Wellington winger Ben Old gave his team the lead going into half time (45+3′) as Macarthur forward Lachlan Rose equalised soon after (59′).

Clayton Lewis put the Phoenix back in front with a phenomenal free kick that bounced in off the crossbar (65′), and teammates Ben Waine (67′) and Bozhidar Kraev (75′) guaranteed the result.

Kosta Barbarouses played the full 90 minutes for Wellington while Bulls midfielder Jerry Skotadis featured off the bench for the final 18 minutes.

Melbourne City-Perth Glory 4-0

An attacking masterclass guided City en route to a massive win on Saturday evening as they reclaimed first place.

Star forward Jamie Maclaren bagged his club’s first two goals (49′, 75′ pen.) to take his season tally to seven, while wingers Marco Tilio (82′) and Mathew Leckie (90+5′) stepped up for the other two.

Western Sydney-Central Coast 0-3

The Mariners stepped up with an impressive away performance to hand the Wanderers their first defeat this term.

The Gosford side found all three of their goals in the second half, thanks to a brace from Michael Ruhs (66′, 72′) and a wonderful strike from the edge of the box by substitute Sam Silvera (81′).

Melbourne Victory-Perth Glory 4-0

Victory finally found their finishing boots after three games without a goal, scoring four times to put their attacking woes behind them.

The hosts went ahead after a penalty from midfielder Jake Brimmer (16′) and star winger Chris Ikonomidis doubled the lead with a strike past goalkeeper Michael Weier at the near post (52′).

Striker Nicholas D’Agostino made it three (54′) and former Panathinaikos frontman and new recruit Bruno Fornaroli stepped up with a goal on debut, slotting his spot-kick into the bottom left (89′).

Jets midfielder Kosta Grozos came on for the last 24 minutes of the game.

Victory coach Tony Popovic had nothing but praise for his side’s performance.

“We are delighted. First, we won the game. We got a clean sheet, again, which is important. And we scored four goals so overall a good night,” Mr Popovic said to media post-match.
