Netflix will stream its first ever Greek drama series, Christoforos Papakaliatis’ Maestro. The series aired on MEGA TV in October and has already become the most watched television drama series in Greece.

Maestro will be available on Netflix in Greece and Cyprus on December 19, and will premiere to a global audience in early 2023.

“I hold Maestro very close to my heart and I feel deeply honoured and happy that this story will travel around the world through Netflix. I’m looking forward to this journey,” actor and screenwriter/director Papakaliatis said.

The series consists of nine episodes and revolves around the main character, Orestes, played by Papakaliatis, who travels to a small Greek island during the Covid pandemic in order to set up a music festival – something not done before on the island.

As he gets acquainted with the locals, the maestro finds himself tangled in a passionate love story with a younger woman, played by Klelia Andriolatou, which entangles him into the familial and social dramas of neighbours and friends.

The series tackles issues of homophobia, domestic violence, addiction, racism, and mental health.

Episodes that have so far aired have become the talk of the town around kitchen tables and cafes, igniting conversations on social media – drawing in fans and detractors.

Maestro’s cast includes major Greek actors Maria Kavoyianni, Marisha Triantafyllidou, Giannis Tsortekis, Orestis Halkias, Kora Karvouni and Dimitris Kitsos. One of the series’ surprise characters is played by famous Greek singer Haris Alexiou who makes her acting debut, and has garnered rave reviews for her performance.
