The City of Manningham has presented third generation Greek-Australian and primary school teacher Stephanie Martinez with its Young Citizen of the Year award for her exceptional community contributions.

Stephanie was recognised as “exemplifying the next generation of change with a focus on community wellbeing, equity and justice for all”.

She was nominated for her role in setting up ‘Connecting Manningham’, an original idea she credits her mother with; an initiative by local residents focused on catering to the needs of the community, made a reality with the help of her brother and their local Rotary/Rotaract clubs.

Alongside a Facebook page where locals can exchange ideas, tips, referrals and have a friendly chat the group also has a website which serves as a directory and search engine, connecting people with local businesses and services.

What started as a fledgling program a little over two years ago has flourished into a self-sustaining community asset promoting businesses, kindness and fostering community programs in the Manningham council area.

At the same ceremony, Varvara Athanasiou-Ioannou, author and founder of the Food for Thought network was honoured as the Doreen Stoves AM PSM JP Volunteer of the Year for her outstanding contribution in the Manningham community.

Last year Varvara launched her book ‘Her Voice: Greek Women and Their Friends’ chronicling the personal and professional lives of 40 women living in Australia.

December 5 marks International Volunteer Day.
