Lecturer of the Modern Greek Studies Program at Macquarie University Dr Patricia Koromvokis represented the Greek diaspora in a pioneering international scientific conference, organised by the historical archives department of two of the most esteemed newspapers in Greece, TO VIMA and TA NEA.

The conference was held on 5 and 6 December at the Faros of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC) under the auspices of the General Secretariat of Hellenism Abroad and Public Diplomacy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.The focus of the conference was the Greek language and Greek literature and the importance of the digital historical archive of the newspapers from February 6, 1922 to this day.

In her brief address Dr Koromvokis, holding the honorary position of Secretary of the conference’s Scientific Committee, shared her presentation ‘The use of foreign terms in journalistic discourse: a linguistic approach’.

“The Historical Archive of two of the most emblematic newspapers in the history of the Greek press ‘TO VIMA’ and ‘TA NEA’ is for the diaspora a bridge of communication with the homeland, a medium of enhancing the Greek diasporic cultural identity and a means of direct information for the Greeks abroad,” Dr Koromvokis said.

The conference, chaired by Emeritus Professor of linguistics and member of the Academy of Athens, Christoforos Charalambakis was attended by distinguished academics undergraduate, postgraduate, doctoral, and postdoctoral students, as well as professors from 19 universities and linguistic institutions from Europe, the USA and Australia.
