Panoramic views of the Aegean sea are dominating the online streaming world these days through a Daniel Craig (aka James Bond) – led blockbuster filmed in Greece.
Since premiering just before Christmas, ‘Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery’ has attracted impressive viewership numbers, placing it on the top of the Netflix global Top 10 for two weeks in a row.
Between 26 December and 1 January it was watched for over 127 million hours. more than three times the hours viewed for the movie taking the second spot, Roald Dahl’s Matilda The Musical.
The total of over 209 million hours viewed by Netflix subscribers so far, also secures for the Knives Out sequel a spot to the All-Time Top 10 Movies list for the streaming platform.
Greece is a core part of the comedy’s narrative, with the blurb stating: “World-famous detective Benoit Blanc heads to Greece to peel back the layers of a mystery surrounding a tech billionaire and his eclectic crew of friends.”
For the record, location is not the film’s sole Greek connection. The stellar cast includes wrestler-turned actor Dave Bautista whose mother is of Greek descent and Greek pop star Eleni Foureira lends one of her songs, Aeraki (To Thiliko), to the Knives Out Sequel soundtrack.
While made to look like a Greek island, the movie’s filming location is actually a luxury resort situated on the Peloponnese peninsula close to popular summer town Porto Heli and near – but not on – the island of Spetses.
Villa 20 of Amanzoe features no less than six pools, its own private spa and even its own Greek taverna. And with nine bedrooms spread over six levels, space is no issue.
The luxury property was designed by Ed Tuttle and Marios Angelopoulos and is currently closed due to reopen for the summer season on 1 April.
But the Netflix blockbuster might remain the closest impression most of us will have of the stunning resort, as the booking price for Villa 20 at the Amanzoe resort reportedly starts from as high as €24,984 (AU$38,889) per night.
