Greece’s star ascendant No.7 seed Maria Sakkari has maintained form with a second straight comeback win at the BNP Paribas Open on Sunday, triumphing over Ukraine’s No.27 seed Anhelina Kalinina 3-6, 6-2, 6-4.

The win has secured her return to the Round of 16 in the WTA 1000 at Indian Wells; a competition she finished last year as runner-up.

Sakkari found success in the match despite an uncertain start, returning from a set and a break down and again recovering from a break down in the third set.

In the first set, Kalinina broke Sakkari in short order and maintained pressure, barring two break points at 3-1 before ending that game with a delivery straight down the line.

But undeterred the Greek began her comeback, letting loose multiple forehand winners to break her opponent’s initiative leveling the match, and thanks to a decisive break in the 10th game, secured it.

It’s her second comeback win in as many matches at the tournament, on Friday night coming around from a set down as she saw the USA’s Shelby Rogers off the court with a 2-6, 6-4, 6-0 result; the Greek’s first win over her opponent in their four meetings.

The bout against Kalinina was also a first, having been beaten by the Ukrainian in their only prior meeting.

Speaking with the Women’s Tennis Association Sakkari praised her opponent while displaying humility noting “I’m making too many unforced errors from the baseline, but all that matters is that I’m finding a way to win and just fighting.”

The champ’s next opponent will be 30-year-old Czech Karolina Pliskova.

The No.17 seed and former World No.1 defeated Russia’s Veronika Kudermotova in straight sets 6-1, 7-5 on Sunday.

It’ll be the pair’s sixth meeting, with Sakkari one match behind in the tally after defeat at the hands of the Russian 6-1, 6-2 in Dubai last month.
