Real estate investment trust Vicinity Centres will host an inaugural Greek Independence Day festival at Oakleigh Central, this Saturday 25 March.

The annual commemoration of the start of the 1821 Greek War of Independence; 25 March is among the most significant calendar dates for Greek communities around the world.

As a hub of Hellenism , Oakleigh has exploded with Greek flair, becoming the city’s ‘Little Athens’.

The festival, is set to be a celebration of culture and community, and will showcase live music, traditional dance, performances as well as a number of retail promotions.

From 9:30 am roving performances by musicians and dancers will grace the centre and Eaton Mall; with many more throughout the day displaying both the regional traditions of Greece as well as more contemporary offerings.

It’ll also host the debut of a pop-up market within Oakleigh Central, showcasing eight local businesses offering up Greek food, drink and much more.

Bakers, makers, and craft specialists will set up stalls throughout the centre offering traditional wares and delights to all comers.

Oakleigh Central’s Centre Manager Christine Hill said “We’re so proud to host this celebration for the community, which brings together the very best of local Greek culture; food, dancing and family fun.”

They’re inviting members of Melbourne’s Greek community and all Melbournians who love a true community festival to be a part of the festivities at Oakleigh Central, 39 Hanover Street, Oakleigh from 9am to 5pm on Saturday 25 March.
