On 24 March the Hellenic Women’s Federation of Victoria held an in joint celebration of International Women’s Day and Greek Independence Day.

Sofia Mastoris OAM, the organisation’s president led those assembled in a minute of silence in honour of “all the women who are no longer with us.”

Committee member Kathy Georgiou addressed attendees with two speeches, one dedicated to women while the other expressed the significance of 25 March, the anniversary of Greece’s 1821 war of independence.

Among those in attendance were Kat Theophanous, state member for Northcote and Parliamentary Secretary for Women’s Health and Maureen Corrigan representing Federal Immigration and Multicultural Affairs minister Andrew Giles.

The City of Darebin’s Mayor Julie Williams was also at the event, as well as State Executive member of the Victorian RSL Ange Kenos JP and 3CR‘s Bill Papaioannou.

The event was reportedly well received, where guests danced, socialized and paid respect to two days of paramount significance.
