The Sydney Greek Film Society will screen the Angelique Kourounis’ ‘Golden Dawn: A public affair’ documentary on Thursday, March 30 at the Greek Atlas Community and Cultural Centre. THis is the follow-up to of her documentary ‘Golden Dawn: A personal affair’ which delved into how the Greek neo Nazi party functioned within Greece’s political landscape. Kourounis’ ‘Golden Dawn: A public affair’ investigates forms of resistance to Nazi ideology throughout Europe.

She follows the results of the latest European elections, which were dramatic especially in legislative elections. Golden Dawn just missed their entry into the Greek parliament, but a new far right wing party did make it, and two ministers in the conservative government are nostalgic for the dictatorship of the Greek Colonels and ar notorious anti-Semites, homophobes and anti-migration all part of the Golden Dawn agenda.

“Back in 2009 when I started shooting the documentary ‘Golden Dawn a personal affair’, I was wondering what was the nature of this party that was rapidly growing in Greece and had made its entry into the municipal council of Athens. Five years later when I finished the movie, Golden Dawn had become the third political force of the country,” said Kourounis.

“The question that puzzled me was why certain Greeks voted for them despite the trial, despite all the revelations? What is going on ?

‘Golden Dawn: A public affair’ essentially examines resistance to Neo-Nazis and other far tight groups.

A crowd funding campaign will begin on April 20 , the anniversary date of the beginning of the Golden Dawn trial in 2015.

A Q&A Skype discussion with the director will take place after the screening.
