Manchester United have thrown away a commanding Europa League quarter-final lead against Sevilla as late Tyrell Malacia and Harry Maguire own goals resulted in the first leg ending in a chaotic 2-2 draw.

Having won their play-off against Barcelona and beaten Real Betis in the last-16, Erik ten Hag’s side appeared on course to knock out a third Spanish side.

Marcel Sabitzer’s quick-fire first-half brace put United in control of the Europa League quarter-final against Sevilla at Old Trafford, with Antony hitting the woodwork as they pushed for a deserved third.

David De Gea denied Tanguy Nianzou in first-half stoppage-time but the six-time champions had offered precious little until a manic conclusion.

First Malacia was caught napping and ended up turning in former Manchester City man Jesus Navas’ hopeful cross, before key defender Lisandro Martinez pulled up in agony.

Fellow centre-back Raphael Varane had already been withdrawn at the break and United ended the match with 10 men having already made their allotted five changes.

Sevilla smelt blood and equalised in stoppage time as substitute Youssef En-Nesyri’s header ricocheted in off Maguire.

If that late sucker punch and United’s growing injury list was not enough, they also head to Spain for the reverse fixture without the suspended Bruno Fernandes.

Sabitzer told BT Sport: “It was a rollercoaster game. We gave easy goals away and in the end it’s a draw. It was stupid goals and that’s not what we wanted.

“When you’re 2-0 up at home you have to get it done. We have to go to Seville and get it done there.”

At De Kuip stadium, Matts Wieffer’s second-half volley gave Feyenoord a 1-0 home win over Roma, leaving the Italians’ boss Jose Mourinho a tough hurdle back in the capital.

Oussama Idrissi set up the goal in the 54th minute for the Dutch side by breaking down the left before providing a precise cross for Wieffer in a victory that was a sweet revenge for the hosts on Thursday.

The game was a rematch of last year’s final in the inaugural edition of the third-tier Europa Conference League, which Roma won 1-0 for Mourinho’s fifth European title.

Roma captain Lorenzo Pellegrini wasted a golden opportunity two minutes before half-time, hitting the post of Feyenoord goalkeeper Justin Bijlow’s goal from the penalty spot.

Roma forwards Paulo Dybala and Tammy Abraham both left the game because of injuries.

Juventus will travel for their second-leg tie away to Sporting with a 1-0 advantage thanks to a 73rd-minute goal from Federico Gatti, while Leverkussen and Union Saint-Gilloise drew 1-1.

In the Conference League quarters, West Ham’s perfect 10-game record in the third-tier competition came to an end with a 1-1 draw at Gent.

Gent top scorer Hugo Cuypers salvaged the draw for the Belgian hosts, equalising with his fifth goal in the competition this season 12 minutes into the second half.

Danny Ings had earlier tapped in a cross from Jarrod Bowen that came after a quickly taken throw-in by Vladimir Coufal to give the visitors a lead in first-half stoppage time.

In other results, Basel and Nice drew 2-2, Anderlecht beat Socceroos goalkeeper Mat Ryan twice in their win over Alkmaar while Lech Poznan went down 4-1 to Fiorentina at home.
