Journey beyond the borders of modern day Greece to regions once the source of Hellenic culture on Saturday when the Dance Academy of the Greek Orthodox Community of South Australia presents the dance and music performance ‘ΕΛΛΗΝΩΝ ΧΩΜΑΤΑ’ (Ellinon Homata) – the Greeks’ Soil.

A look back at historical locations once populated by Greeks, including Cyprus, Asia Minor, Pontus, Northern Thrace and Northern Epirus.

Said to be a powerful and emotionally charged performance, dedicated to the Hellenic refugees, inspired by their stories, songs, music and dances – a reminder these lands are very much alive in the hearts and souls of Hellenes all over the world.

Hellas Lucas of The Dance Academy spoke to Neos Kosmos about the event this weekend.

“Dancers ranging from age of five to early 50s, about 70 dancers performing dances from the five regions. We have 12 musicians from both Melbourne and Adelaide playing the appropriate music and three singers. And of course costumes from each region,” she told Neos Kosmos.

This will be the academy’s first performance since 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with the last one being a commemoration of the 1821 Greek Revolution.

“Our aim is to maintain our Greek culture for current and future generations of Greek Australians, and I think we’ve been pretty successful up until now,” Λουκά said.

The event will be held on May 13 at 7 pm (ACST) at the Royalty Theatre, 69 Angas Street, Adelaide.
