The Greek-Australian Cultural League (GACL) just announced the opening of the annual literary competition, and is inviting writers in Australia to submit their works in Greek and/or English. The competition is open to individuals over 18 years of age.

Entrants have the opportunity to showcase their unpublished works in two categories: Poetry and Short Story. The deadline for submissions is Friday, June 30.

The winning entries in each category and language will be published in Issue Number 69 of the GACL’s annual bilingual periodical, Antipodes. The announcement of the winners will take place in October during a special function that coincides with the periodical’s launch.

To ensure fair judging, separate adjudication will be conducted for each language. Participants are allowed to submit works in one or both categories and in one or both languages, with only one piece permitted for each chosen category. It is important to adhere to the content limits, which are 100 verses (lines) for poems and 2000 words for short stories. Submissions that exceed these limits or contain numerous grammatical and syntactical mistakes will be automatically rejected and not forwarded to the Judging Panel.

All entries must be original works by the authors and should not have been previously submitted to other competitions or published. To maintain anonymity during the judging process, each work should be signed with a pseudonym (nom de plume), which should remain consistent for all entries by the same participant.

Competition entries must be submitted electronically as Word document attachments to the email address gaclitcomp@gmail.com. Additionally, participants should send a separate text to the same email address providing their personal details, including the pseudonym, full name, address, telephone numbers, and the number of verses in poems or the number of words in short stories. This serves as the entry or Application form.

The Literary judges hold the right to disqualify entries with too many syntactical or orthographical mistakes. First Prize winners in each category and language will receive a commemorative certificate and a monetary prize. Second and Third Prizes, as well as Commendations, will be awarded commemorative certificates and books.

All winning works in every category and language will be published in the latest issue of Antipodes, coinciding with the announcement of the results.
