Melbourne Hellas HC are looking for people to help form Australia’s first ever Greek based hockey club. Hellas would be located in Melbourne’s north, likely around Bundoora or Preston.

Luke, the person behind Hellas, wants to grow support of the sport amongst the community.

He has been in touch with Hockey Victoria, who seem to be happy with the idea of introducing the sport to a newer demographic, and are helping him with the process.

Once the club is established, there will need to be a focus shift to young people, so local schools like St John’s College in Preston may like to get involved down the track.

Those who have little to no experience playing hockey are encouraged to join, with Luke saying the plan would be for Hellas to play in a league or competition in 2025, with a year of solely training.

The Greek soccer clubs of Australia are the blueprint for Luke.

“The Greek community is absolutely massive in Australian soccer, we’ve got so many clubs that are very successful,” he told Neos Kosmos.

“Hockey is one of those things where it’s sort of lacking. There’s not much exposure for the community.

“If we run a hockey club like soccer clubs here, it will succeed in many different ways.”

Melbourne Hellas HC would like the Greek community to support them, even if it’s as simple as liking their Facebook page.
