Stella Vosniadou, an Emerita Professor at Flinders University, has been honoured with the Humboldt Research Prize, for her academic achievements.

The Humboldt Research Award, also known as the Humboldt Prize, is awarded by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation of Germany to internationally distinguished scientists and scholars, working outside Germany in recognition of their contributions to the field of research.

In addition to the honour, the recipients receive a financial grant amounting to €60,000, which also provides the possibility of further support for their ongoing research.

The Humboldt Research Grant will play a pivotal role in facilitating the dissemination of these research findings, extending their reach beyond Germany and into the broader European landscape.

Vosniadou, who is Emirata Professor in the College of Education, Psychology, and Social Work has been internationally recognized for her work in the field of learning and conceptual development, is also a member of the American Educational Research Association and the Society for Cognitive Science and an elected member of the Academia Europaea and the International Academy of Education (IAE).

She was the Project Leader of the ARC Discovery Project (2018-2022) entitled “Teaching how to learn,” which was funded with $485,000.

The project examines both in-service and pre-service teachers’ knowledge, exploring their beliefs, and practices in establishing learning environments that encourage cognitive engagement and foster the development of self-regulated learning abilities among students.

The findings of the research were presented at a symposium held at the Australian Association for Research in Education annual conference in Melbourne in November 2021, which were also published in the UNESCO International Bureau of Education’s Education Practices series.

Professor Vosniadou has been deeply involved in the European Association for Research on Learning and Instruction (EARLI), where she has held the esteemed position of past president. In acknowledgment of her significant research contributions, she was honoured with the prestigious Oeuvre Award by EARLI in 2021.
