With a consistent and awe-inspiring display of athleticism and determination, Stavros Michael, along with six other extraordinary athletes, including an Afghanistan veteran seal, completed the grueling 96km Kokoda track in the fourth edition of the Kokoda Ultra Marathon.
This epic journey, spanning over seven days and reaching altitudes of 5,500m, tested the limits of human endurance while honouring the legacy of Australian and PNG heroes.
The Kokoda track presented a challenging course with brutal climbs and non-stop technical terrain, where even running was a luxury.
Battling 32-degree humidity, rugged bush tugging, mudslides, and the loss of gear in the river, Stavros and his fellow runners pushed themselves beyond their limits.
Borrowing shoes from the locals to complete the final leg of the run, they experienced firsthand the hardships faced by those who once trod this path with 20kg weight and artillery.
Reflecting on the journey, Stavros shared, “This trail is not for the faint-hearted. It provided me with a glimpse into Australian history and the immense sacrifice of these brave men, who were just 28 years old on average. Walking in their footsteps was an honour and a humbling experience. The scenic views were breathtaking, and the hospitality of the locals was heartwarming. I extend my gratitude to the porters, who are true beasts, and the organisers, Kokoda Xtreme, for making this incredible journey possible.”
Throughout the arduous trek, Stavros and his companions found camaraderie, respect, and a sense of walking through history.
Their journey not only tested their physical limits but also provided a profound connection to the past and the sacrifices made by those who came before.
As they crossed the finish line, the athletes emerged not just as winners of a race, but as ambassadors of endurance and perseverance.
