Stefanos Tsitsipas has suffered a shocking loss to Gael Monfils at the Canadian Open just days after the Greek beat Alex de Minaur to win the Los Cabos title.

Gael Monfils has rolled back the years to upset Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-4 6-3 at the Canadian Open while Greek Australian qualifier Thanasi Kokkinakis bowed out in a tight tussle with Lorenzo Musetti, with the Italian winning 4-6 7-5 6-2.

The soon to be 25-year-old Tsitsipas had three of his serves broken and three break points saved by Monfils, including the final game of Wednesday’s match, that saw the world number four sent off in 85 minutes.

The victory for the Frenchman, who was playing in only his 11th match of an injury-hit year, marked his first top-10 win since he beat Russia’s Daniil Medvedev in the third-round last year at Indian Wells.

Tsitsipas had been looking for back-to-back titles after defeating Australian No.1 Alex de Minaur in the final of Los Cabos in Mexico at the weekend.

Elsewhere, De Minaur has rolled into the third round of the Toronto Masters, setting up a clash with world No.9 Taylor Fritz.

The Australian overcame Canadian wild card Gabriel Diallo 6-4 7-5 on Wednesday while eighth seed Fritz downed Frenchman Ugo Humbert 7-6 (9-7) 3-6 6-3.
