SBS has disclosed that it is currently engaged in discussions with the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) concerning its potential participation in the upcoming Eurovision Song Contest.
Australia was initially invited to participate as a one-off for the Eurovision Song Contest’s 60th anniversary in 2015.
Following an impressive 5th-place finish in the Grand Final, which automatically secured their qualification, Australia received subsequent invitations until 2019 when a formal 5-year contract was inked between SBS and the EBU, granting Australia the ability to participate without requiring a special invitation.
However, 2023 marked the end of Australia’s participation under the existing agreement, raising questions within the Eurovision community about the country’s involvement in the forthcoming 2024 Eurovision Song Contest in Malmö, Sweden.
SBS issued the following statement on the matter:
“Eurovision holds a special place within the SBS family. Discussions are currently underway regarding Australia’s future participation in this prestigious song contest. We understand the anticipation of Eurovision fans for an update and appreciate their patience as we navigate these next steps. We will confirm details as soon as they become available.”
The deadline for nations to withdraw from the competition without incurring penalties is October 11, providing SBS and the EBU with time to negotiate and potentially reach an agreement.
In 2023, Australia was represented by Voyager with the song “Promise.”
They not only won the Second Semi-Final but also achieved a top-ten finish in the Grand Final, securing 9th place with a total of 151 points.
