Direct from Greece, theatrical comedy ‘Opou GIS kai PATRIS’ will be coming to the 42nd Greek Festival of Sydney for a limited four shows in March.

The production, written by lawyer and author Konstantinos Kalymnios, will be held at the Greek Theatre, Mandouridion in Marrickville between March 1-3.

Featuring Stamatis Tzelepis and Elena Tsefala, the thought-provoking play delves into the essence of the first generation of immigrants, exploring the gradual fading of their unique way of life over time.

Kalymnios was inspired by his own family and others who laid the foundations of the Greek community.

These foundations, customs and behaviours that are disappearing as time goes on.

The story is an attempt by the playwright to preserve the distinctive dialect and traditions of his grandparents’ micro-community in Essendon, Moonee Ponds, and Ascot Vale in Victoria.

Festival Chair Nia Karter is excited to bring this show to Australia.

“We are thrilled to showcase ‘Opou GIS kai PATRIS’ as part of our 42nd Greek Festival of Sydney,” she said in a media release sent to Neos Kosmos.

“This production is a testament to the richness of Greek culture, and we are honoured to host such a talented cast and crew.

“The play not only resonates with the historical narrative of the Greek immigrant experience but also adds a layer of humour that will undoubtedly captivate and entertain our audience.”

Audiences will be provided with a rich linguistic and cultural experience, as the play features the Epirotic dialect, with elements from various parts of Greece.

Opou GIS kai PATRIS is not only a portrayal of the migrant experience but also a look at the current situation in Greece with segments commenting on it from various perspectives – both historical and beyond.

In essence the play is a historical retrospective, exploring common points that define us throughout time with some humour sprinkled in there.
