Jobseekers are in store for a series of events in Western Sydney that will serve as excellent networking opportunities to find employment in industries like Home Care, Health and Disability, Transport and Logistics, Construction, Hospitality and Cleaning.

Sydney’s Western region is set to hold a number of Employment Accelerator events over the next month, which will connect job seekers with potential employers.

The program is an initiative of Sydney Greater West CALD and Migrant Employment Working Group, with the latest five of these events also being funded by the SSI Home Care Workforce Support Program.

SydWest Multicultural Services CEO Elfa Moraitakis stating this initiative started with the aim of helping new arrival refugees and other migrants find jobs.

“The Employment Accelerator events aim to cut through the time and red tape that can be experienced when applying for a job,” Ms Moraitakis told Neos Kosmos.

“The ultimate goal is to improve employment outcomes for refugees and migrants in Western Sydney. For many of this year’s events, we are seeking to increase significantly the number of people entering aged care Home Care services as a career pathway.”

The SydWest Multicultural Services CEO (who has roots from Chania in Crete) stressed that the events are indeed open to anyone seeking employment in these industries, particularly in Home Care.

“We are looking for people who have a big heart and who want to help make a difference in other people’s lives. There are lots of opportunities to build a great career,” she said.

Ms Moraitakis elaborated on the nature of these events, which usually feature short pitches from prospective employers, training organisations and job support agencies so the job seekers understand the different organisations in the room.

“Following these presentations, all jobseekers are invited to connect with the employers and training organisations at the event to accelerate their job application and find out more about relevant education and training programs, many of which are free,” she told Neos Kosmos.

Two such EA events have already been held this year as part of this program that saw over 100 people attend.

“We think there is a big demand for job seekers to connect with employers and registered training organisations and learn more about their options in Home Care,” Ms Moraitakis said.

One more Home Care-specific event has been set for later this month with Ms Moraitakis explaining that anyone interested in attending must first register online at their website.

“Any interested participants can also call our office on 9621-6633 and talk to Tonny, our project officer, if they require more information.”

She assured that there will be staff on site for those who might need language support, while also inviting interested Home Care employers to consider registering and participating in these events as part of their Home Care worker recruitment strategies.

“We want the job seekers to have options when they meet employers,” Ms Moraitakis said.

In addition to this, three events have been organised for March as part of a bigger collaboration that is being facilitated by the Sydney Greater West CALD Employment Working Group, a Forum that SydWest runs in collaboration with Jobs Local.

These will include other industries like Health and Disability, Transport and Logistics, Construction and Hospitality and Cleaning.

“We hope to attract more than 250 jobseekers to these events,” Ms Moraitakis said, who is also a founding member of the Organisation of Hellene and Hellene-Cypriot Women of Australia (OEEGA).
