At their International Women’s Day function, the Hellenic Women’s Federation will be honouring Sofia Mastoris OAM, its inaugural president from 2003 to 2023.
Mastori’s contributions to the Federation and the community at large have been immense and impactful. Despite facing personal challenges, at 85 years old, she continues to inspire with her unwavering will to survive and fight. By promoting the event and the Federation, the community aims to make her feel a sense of pride and accomplishment for her incredible contributions.
Throughout her tenure, she has been a steadfast supporter of Hellenic women, attending Greek National Day wreath layings, organising multiple celebratory events every year, and supporting women with cancer while battling her own cancer struggles.
She has also been a pillar of strength in fundraising for bushfire victims, fundraising for kids with cancer, and keeping Hellenism alive by organising Protomayia festivals at Maroondah Park.
One of her notable achievements includes organising a multicultural quilt that is proudly displayed at the Whittlesea Greek Community Centre in Lalor, a testament to her commitment to preserving and celebrating cultural diversity.
Sofia Mastoris’ dedication to community service was recognised when she was awarded the Order of Australia Medal (OAM) for her outstanding contributions. Her selfless volunteer work has touched the lives of many and has made a lasting impact on the community.
At the event, taking place on Sunday, March 3, with the support of the Victorian Multicultural Commission, the community will also be officially celebrating the 20th year of the Federation with a cake-cutting ceremony. Men and women are invited to attend.
