Peta Trimis has helped the Young Matildas to their second win in the AFC U20 Women’s Asian Cup in Uzbekistan, beating the host nation 2-0.

Trimis was involved in almost everything in the first half – assisting a goal from Daniela Galic in the first five minutes of the game.

The 17-year-old was then gifted a goal of her own just before half time with a clever touch after a long ball from Shay Hollman in midfield set it up perfectly for the Central Coast Mariners striker to have a 1v1 opportunity with the goalkeeper.

She slotted it into the back of the net tidily and gave her side a two-goal lead heading into the break.

With Australia promising fast-paced, front-foot football, this is what the fans got to see, and Trimis played a big role in that game plan.

This was seen from the get go, with Alana Murphy taking a corner in the second minute of the game that saw 16-year-old Maddie Casper’s firmly struckhalf- volley force a save from goalkeeper Fotima Bakhriddinova.

After her first half heroics, Trimis was withdrawn alongside captain Jessika Nash, to see others play some minutes, including Tijan McKenna for the first time in the tournament.

The Young Matildas created plenty of opportunity to score a third goal but could not find the net, thus sealing a comfortable 2-0 victory.

Shooting a stunning 30 times to Uzbekistan’s one shot, 13 of which were on target.

Western Sydney Wanderers’ defender Alexia Apostolakis also played, having appeared in four of the five games during the qualifiers.

If Australia can avoid a seven-goal defeat against Chinese Taipei on Saturday, they will advance to the semi-finals of the tournament and secure a place in the 2024 FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup in Colombia.
