The Greek Orthodox Community of South Australia (GOCSA) marked International Women’s Day with an event themed ‘Count Her In: Invest in Women. Accelerate Progress.’

Held at Olympic Hall on March 8, the event celebrated women’s achievements while highlighting the ongoing journey towards gender equality and female participation.

The event was attended by various dignitaries, including the Mayor of the City of Charles Sturt, Ms Angela Evans, and representatives of other Greek associations.

Distinguished speakers Angela Michael, Principal of Gawler & District College B-12, and Maria Panagiotidis, Magistrate at Adelaide Magistrates Court, shared inspiring stories, highlighting the importance of advancing gender equality. Hellas Lucas, chair of the GOCSA Cultural Committee, reflected on the strides made while acknowledging the work still needed.

Honouring the occasion Mira El Dannawi MLC, representing the Premier of South Australia, emphasised recognising and celebrating women’s contributions in multicultural communities.

She brought up government initiatives supporting Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Women.

Michelle Lensink MLC, Shadow Minister for Women, praised women’s roles in families, communities, and the workforce, underscoring the importance of acknowledging their efforts.

Angela Michael shared her experiences growing up in a Greek family and her passion for education, highlighting perseverance, purpose, and passion in shaping young minds.

Maria Panagiotidis stressed the need for ongoing efforts to ensure women receive fair treatment.

GOCSA also honoured two female volunteers, Mrs Koula Tsintziniotis and Mrs Niki Tsatsos, for their outstanding contributions.

The event was attended by dignitaries, including Mayor Angela Evans of the City of Charles Sturt and representatives of other Greek associations.

The celebration concluded with a buffet dinner and refreshments, accompanied by music from the local band Meraki Ensemble.
