The findings from New Democracy and SYRIZA have both drawn unique conclusions regarding the Tempe train crash last year, with the governing party suggesting railway regulations were violated while SYRIZA has put blame on the former government.

The reports made in regards to Greece’s deadliest rail accident, which resulted in the deaths of 57 people and injured numerous others, have both led to different reasons for the cause of the tragedy.

The parliamentary majority of ND’s report concluded that the general railway regulation was violated seven times, with witnesses saying that adherence to these rules could have prevented the incident.

The report emphasised transparency, refuting any allegations of cover-up attempts, and clarified that operational decisions were made to facilitate the removal of damaged trains.

A judicial inquiry is also currently underway.

The SYRIZA members, who are part of the parliamentary committee investigating the Tempe tragedy, have placed blame on the former ND political leadership of the Transport Ministry in their respective findings.

They alleged there was a government cover-up and asserted that implementing Convention 717, which involves upgrading the signalling and remote-control system in the Greek railway network, could have prevented the catastrophe.

The SYRIZA members have requested accountability on the incident and pointed blame squarely at the former ministers for disregarding for disregarding safety standards and potentially committing manslaughter.

They stressed the need for a complete and detailed investigation into the tragedy and urged for judicial clarification regarding ministerial duties.
