Historian Jim Claven will present ‘From Imbros Over the Sea’, a photographic exhibition & lecture as part of 42nd Greek Festival of Sydney in collaboration with The Imvrians Society of Melbourne, on Sunday, 7 April.

The event, supported by the Victorian Government and Victorian Veterans Council, honours the pivotal role of the Northern Aegean Island of Imbros (Imvros) in the Gallipoli campaign during World War I and the shared history between Greece and Australia.

“This exhibition vividly portrays a crucial era, highlighting the bravery and sacrifices made by those who served during the Gallipoli campaign,” Festival Chair Nia Karteris said.

Jim Claven OAM, has dedicated over a decade to researching various aspects of Hellenic culture and history. His work focuses on the Hellenic link to Australia’s Anzac story and has been published in journals and newspapers worldwide. Claven’s books, including ‘Lemnos & Gallipoli Revealed’ (2019) and ‘Grecian Adventure’ (2022), along with his latest publication ‘From Imbros Over The Sea: Imbros & Gallipoli Revealed’ (2023), showcase his extensive archival and field research.

In addition to his scholarly work, Jim Claven has delivered historical presentations on the Hellenic link to Anzac in Australia and Greece, including at the Athens War Museum.

As Secretary of Melbourne’s Lemnos Gallipoli Commemorative Committee, he has led various commemorative projects, including the Lemnos Gallipoli Memorial and the Australian Pier Memorial on Lemnos.
