Greece and Ukraine have had further talks about their defence cooperation amidst the Russo-Ukrainian War.

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy spoke on Thursday ahead of a European Council meeting.

On an X post, Zelenskiy said the two spoke about the implementation of agreements they made when Mitsotakis recently visited Ukraine.

The two nations have an ongoing defence cooperation and are looking to particularly strengthen Ukraine’s air defence.

“On March 6th in Odesa, Prime Minister Mitsotakis could witness firsthand the importance of reliably protecting our skies,” Zelenskiy said.

“Additionally, I briefed him on the Russian strike on Kyiv this morning.

“We also agreed to speed up work on a bilateral security agreement based on the G7 Vilnius Declaration.”

Earlier this month the Greek PM and Ukrainian President were visiting the Black Sea port of Odesa when a Russian missile hit the infrastructure, close enough for leaders to see the strike.

Also taking to social media today, Mitsotakis shared that Greece will continue to support Ukraine.

“My visit to Odessa impressed upon me even more the urgency of stepping up our assistance,” he said.

Greece, a NATO member and traditional ally, is supporting the Ukraine’s bid to join the European Union.

“I am glad to see Ukraine making steady progress towards EU membership,” Mitsotakis said.

According to AMNA, government sources have said while the two leaders made agreements, nothing official has been signed.

Last July, the G7 adopted a joint declaration of support for the security of Ukraine, which the EU and its member states have joined.

The EU is now discussing with Kyiv an EU-Ukraine security support agreement.

Greece like the other EU member states, is discussing bilaterally with Ukraine.
