The schools of the Greek Community of Melbourne (GCM) joined in on the Greek Independence Day celebrations on Monday March 25.

Commemorative events to mark the national day were held across all the school campuses.

A day associated with the path to national liberation and the establishment of the Greek state.

Teachers, students and parents all gathered to pay tribute through parades, wreath laying and other celebrations that involved historical storytelling with puppet shows, traditional dances and songs.

Those involved displayed emotions of joy and pride as the younger students learned the messages and lessons that stem from the struggle of Greeks for freedom and the older students remembered them.

The GCM said events like these are important for the schools as they deepen the bonds between members of the school community, connect generations, help continue traditions, create experiences and memories, and ultimately foster national consciousness and identity.
