It is make-or-break time for Olympiacos’s premiership chances as they prepare for a derby against AEK, with victory enough to keep them in the fight and defeat all but guaranteeing they go another season without a trophy.

The Piraeus giants are striving to achieve the almost impossible task of beating AEK at “Agia Sophia” Stadium on Monday morning (AEDT) in the second round of the Greek Super League play-offs.

AEK has remarkably not lost once at home in the league this campaign, a statistic they will be keen to preserve as they aim to maintain their position as the current league leaders.

For Olympiacos, victory is a must as they are already five points away from first place and cannot afford to fall further behind if they wish to win the championship.

The “red-whites” will need to accomplish something no other Hellenic side has managed this season and beat AEK at their fortress to stand any chance of winning the premiership.

Meanwhile, Panathinaikos battles PAOK at “Leoforos” Stadium in an equally high-profile affair, with both clubs desperate to gain ground on AEK in the title race.

The Greens defeated eternal enemies Olympiacos in their last match, though with that having been three weeks ago, the momentum from that victory has definitely worn off now.

That same fact could be of great benefit to PAOK, given they lost their last fixture which was against crosstown rivals Aris.

Both sides will need to get back into full swing if they hope to secure the three points and keep fighting AEK for first place, with PAOK even capable of leaping ahead of Enosi this round if results go their way.

Aris takes on Lamia at “Kleanthis Vikelidis” Stadium in the other play-offs fixture, and both clubs are essentially playing for pride as they already seem destined to finish in fifth and sixth position respectively.

Giannina is seeking a crucial win over Panetolikos at home on Sunday morning in the second round of the play-outs, with the Epirutans needing maximum points to boost their chances of survival.

Victory for Giannina (currently in last) would improve their odds of avoiding relegation dramatically as they would gain ground on a fellow relegation rival (Panetolikos sitting five points ahead of the Epirus team).

The two other relegation-threatened sides, Volos (13th) and Kifisia (12th), are also set to face off in Magnesia as each side looks to gain an advantage over the other (especially since they are currently equal on 22 points).

OFI hosts an in-form Atromitos outfit that is gunning for Asteras Tripolis’ spot as leader of the relegation group.

The Cretans will be wary to try gain points in this game to keep themselves at a healthy distance from the relegation-battling sides.

Similarly, Panserraikos challenges Asteras Tripolis at home and the timing could be perfect for the Serres club to grab a result as the Arcadians have gone seven straight matches without a win.
