Greece has won its third gold medal at the 2024 European Championships with Stergios Marios Bilas earning a win in the men’s 50 butterfly.

Bilas’ gold medal win came with a record-breaking performance, setting a new Pan-Hellenic record of 23.16, beating Kristian Golomeev’s 23.19 in 2018.

“My only goal was the gold medal. I had a clear mind, I wanted to finish first and I succeeded. Now it’s time for a vacation” the 23-year-old said after winning the gold.

The other two podium finishes were Austrian Simon Butcher in second and Daniel Grakic from Czech Republic in third.

This comes after Apostolos Papastamos won gold in the 400m medley.

Greece now leads in the aquatics, and is fifth overall with three golds, two silvers and a bronze, only behind Spain, Germany, Italy and Hungary.

Greece nearly won another bronze as they touched third in the medley relay but were ultimately disqualified.
