The 2024 World Conference of Diaspora Cypriots took place last week in Nicosia, featuring the 11th World Conference of the World Organisation for Young Overseas Cypriots (NEPOMAK) and the Central Council meeting of the World Federation of Overseas Cypriots (POMAK) alongside the International Coordinating Committee “Justice for Cyprus” (PSEKA). The National Federation of Cypriots in the UK participated with representation from its Executive Committee.
President Nikos Christodoulides officially opened the 2024 NEPOMAK World Conference and POMAK/PSEKA Central Council Meeting in Nicosia. He stressed that the conference comes shortly after the 50th anniversary of Turkey’s illegal invasion and ongoing occupation of Cyprus.
President Christodoulides declared the occupation “not sustainable” and reiterated that solving the Cyprus problem and reunifying the country remains a top priority.
Reflecting on his previous commitment to resume UN-led talks for a solution to the Cyprus issue, he confirmed ongoing efforts, citing the appointment of the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy on Cyprus.
The President also highlighted initiatives to strengthen Cyprus’ international relations, such as the launch of the Amalthea Initiative for humanitarian aid to Gaza.
POMAK President Andreas Papaevripides, PSEKA President Philip Christopher, and NEPOMAK President Christos Tuton also addressed attendees. Their speeches emphasised the diaspora’s unwavering commitment to resolving the Cyprus issue and the hope for future reunification.
The opening ceremony featured addresses from House of Representatives President Annita Demetriou, Minister of Foreign Affairs Constantinos Kombos, Greek Deputy Foreign Minister Giorgos Kotsiras, and H.B. Archbishop of Cyprus George.
The event included a cultural program by Cypriot artist Alexia Vassiliou and a screening of the short film “Rite of Passage” set in Famagusta.
In a closed session, Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Constantinos Kombos briefed delegates on the latest developments in the Cyprus issue and foreign policy. He confirmed the Cypriot Government’s readiness to resume UN-led talks.
Defence Minister Vasilis Palmas and Chief of the National Guard Lieutenant General Georgios Tsitsikostas provided updates on defence policies and recent actions within the Ministry of Defence and the National Guard.
Education Minister Dr. Athena Michaelidou discussed upgrades to the school curriculum and initiatives to support students.
Deputy Executive Director of the Youth Board of Cyprus Maria Miltiadou presented initiatives for young people during the National Year of Youth 2024 and introduced the crowd-sourcing platform, EfkraCY.
