Comedian Mary Coustas, Effie from “Acropolis Now”, is preparing to tour her latest show ‘UpYourselfness’ as she examines the evolution of humanity in a world where political correctness puts restraints on freedom of speech.
Coustas is set to travel all across NSW and Victoria with the show in the coming months, which premiered back in March at the Adelaide Fringe Festival.
The stand-up show is used by the comedian as a means of inviting her audience to tackle the hard questions and to find a means to define ourselves through humanity’s ongoing identity crisis with healthy debate.
She explained that discussion is ingrained in Greek history, evidenced by the ancient philosophers, and that it is important to converse on many topics relevant today like
“We know that if there is one thing we all have in common, it is that we are all different. And because of that we are going to have a difference of opinion. It is time we got some stretch marks on our thinking, people,” Coustas said.
The comedian stated her own disappointment with the battle between political correctness and freedom of speech, which is what drove her to create her latest show that delves on topics like feminism, racism, sexism, wokeism, pronounism and goodlookingism.
“Truth is, life’s complicated…and so are we. The only thing that can save us is an open mind, self-love, a big set of balls and a sense of humour,” Coustas said.
“UpYourselfness” has already had shows in NSW which will continue at various locations up until November, with Victorian performances scheduled for late November and January 2025.
