In a significant announcement at a Melbourne Press Club lunch, Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan revealed her government’s bold new plan to make housing more accessible, particularly for younger generations. The Premier announced that under the new policy, Victorians will be able to build an additional home on their block without planning approval, provided they comply with existing heritage, flood, and other by-laws.

The reforms, which aim to ease the housing crisis and provide more opportunities for millennials to enter the property market, will also make subdivision easier. For those with large enough blocks, the option to build a second home will become more accessible, addressing Melbourne’s growing population and housing demand.

Premier Allan stated, “Forces have changed, and time has come to plan for Melbourne as Australia’s largest city,” adding that she would love more bipartisanship on issues like housing

The initiative is part of her broader agenda to tackle housing affordability and ensure that young Australians can find a foothold in the property market.

The government plans to consult with housing experts and stakeholders, with the final policy expected to be rolled out by early 2025. “Our goal is simple,” said Premier Allan, “we want to ensure millennials get into homes.”

The panel to look at said policy was announced today.

With Melbourne poised to overtake Sydney as Australia’s largest city, this policy marks a significant step toward addressing the needs of a growing population while maintaining the city’s livability.
