An outpouring of grief has overcome thousands of Greeks in Melbourne who had the fortune of knowing Kostas Papakonstantinou, one of the most iconic figures of the Greek community.
Kostas Papakonstantinou has passed away at the age of 82. He was born in the village of Kteni in Kozani, Greece and came to Australia in 1968 aboard the Australis.
In 1970 he married the love of his life, Dina (née Savvidis) from the village of Asproula, Kozani. They were blessed with eight children and grandchildren.
Always smiling, polite, warm-spoken, and devout, he immediately won over others with his kind and gentle manner.
Most knew him as a photographer. In his studio, located across from the historic Annunciation of Our Lady Church, he captured countless Greek couples, and later, he worked alongside family members in a floral shop.
As his daughter Stella—herself well-known in our community—told Neos Kosmos: “The Annunciation of Our Lady Church was a part of his life, and he served it with dedication for over 50 years. He was also a member of the Administrative Council of the Greek Community of Melbourne.”
Among other memories, his daughter Stella shared:
“My father adored our family beyond words, and his love extended to everyone, especially his grandchildren.
His compassion for others was boundless, and he offered help to anyone he met in life who needed support. One of his oft-repeated messages to everyone was: ‘Always keep unwavering faith and trust in Christ.’
He worked hard his entire life and never gave up, even during his long battle with cancer.
He was a true, honourable fighter for truth, justice, and integrity. An authentic believer in God’s truth, teachings, and way of life.”
He passed away peacefully at his home, in accordance with his wishes.
On that final day, the ambulance was called three times within 12 hours for assistance.
During the third visit, he peacefully “fell asleep”. I had been by his side for years, caring for him 24/7. I never left his side until his last breath. I admired his love, strength, and absolute faith in God.”
Kostas’s funeral date will be announced shortly.
