The Greek Orthodox Community of NSW will continue the tradition of recognising the anniversary of the Athens Polytechnic Uprising, ensuring that the events that occurred on 17 November 1973 are not forgotten.

The community organisation will commemorate the 51st anniversary of the date when Greece’s military junta turned its forces on its own people with an event at the Greek Community Club in Lakemba on Sunday 17 November at 4pm.

The commemoration, organised by the GOC of NSW and the Polytechnic Commemoration Committee, will feature a program of speeches, poem recitals and a wreath laying ceremony.

The event will include the participation of students from the organisation’s Greek afternoon schools as well as representatives from the Greek societies of NSW’s major universities.

The GOC of NSW requested that all parties interested in laying a wreath or flowers at the event contact them either by calling (02) 9740 6022 or by emailing reception@goc.com.au by Thursday 14 November.

The Combined Universities Greek Association (CUGA) will be co-hosting a commemorative event of their own for the Polytechnic Uprising with the University of Sydney’s Department of Modern Greek.

The event will be held on Friday 15 November at 6.30pm in a lecture theatre at the University of Sydney, with the students continuing to contribute their voice to the anniversary of the event which affected university students and citizens alike over 50 years ago.
