The wider Greek community in NSW is preparing to continue its annual tradition of recognising the anniversary of the Athens Polytechnic Uprising, with events organised to ensure the awful scenes that took place 51 years ago are never forgotten.
The initiatives will commence from this Friday 15 November wherein the Combined Universities Greek Association (CUGA) will be co-hosting a commemorative event for the Polytechnic Uprising with the University of Sydney’s Department of Modern Greek.
The event will start at 6.30pm and will be held in a lecture theatre at the University of Sydney, with Associate Professor Anthony Dracopoulos and Harry Danalis, President of the Greek Orthodox Community of NSW, to serve as speakers.
The initiative represents the continued effort by Sydney’s Hellenic-background university students to shed light on this historic event wherein terrible suffering was imposed on university students and citizens alike, with their first such commemoration occurring in 2019.
The students will also add their voice to the commemorative event organised by the GOC of NSW on Sunday at 4pm.
The community organisation will hold its event at the Greek Community Club in Lakemba, with it falling on the 51st anniversary of the date Greece’s military junta turned its forces on its own people.
The commemoration, organised by the GOC of NSW and the Polytechnic Commemoration Committee, will feature a program of speeches, poem recitals and a wreath laying ceremony.
In addition to the CUGA representatives, it will also include the participation of students from the GOC of NSW’s Greek afternoon schools.
The community organisation requested that all parties interested in laying a wreath or flowers at the event contact them either by calling (02) 9740 6022 or by emailing reception@goc.com.au by Thursday 14 November.
