The former head of Greece’s left-wing Syriza party, Stefanos Kasselakis, on Saturday announced the creation of a new Movement for Democracy two weeks after he was kicked out of Syriza.

The 36-year-old told a meeting of about 300 supporters that “politics must meet (the needs) of today”, the ERT broadcaster reported.

The businessman’s election to head Syriza in September 2023 was a surprise for many. But he was accused of seeking to take the party in a more centrist direction and the central committee replaced him this month amid wrangling over his leadership style.

Some 18 Syriza deputies have quit the party over the past year leaving it with just 29 in parliament, now behind the PASOK Socialist party.
