AGAPI Care hosted Victoria’s inaugural International Men’s Day on 19 November at the Olympic Hotel in Preston. With the theme “Men’s Health Champions,” the event highlighted the importance of men’s health, well-being, and positive role models while celebrating their contributions to society.
Central to the celebration were the six objectives of International Men’s Day, which are as follows:
- Promoting positive male role models
- Celebrating men’s contributions
- Focusing on men’s health and well-being
- Highlighting discrimination against men
- Improving gender relations
- Creating a safer, better world
AGAPI Care Chief Operating Officer, Ange Pilipasidis, opened the event, honouring men as “role models and inspirations to all of us.”
President Arthur Evriniadis addressed the alarming male suicide rate of 381 in 2024, calling it a “pandemic.” He spoke of the need for open conversations about men’s struggles, emphasising kindness and emotional openness.
CEO Mary Gakopoulos reflected on her father’s resilience and legacy, which shaped her and her siblings. She underscored the event’s mission to raise awareness about men’s health and foster support for inclusive masculinity.
Victorian Multicultural Commission Chairperson Vivienne Nguyen, advocated for recognising diversity among men, particularly in advocacy, and expressed gratitude to men uplifting vulnerable groups.
Clinical Psychologist Alex Panagiotopoulos highlighted men’s need for emotional validation, addressing societal pressures and the link between substance use and emotional suppression.
“Silence often leads to suffering,” he said, calling for supportive communication.
Heidelberg United Football Club President Steve Tsalikidis, shared personal insights on balancing work, family, and sport. Reflecting on his father’s immigrant journey, he emphasised respect, open affection, and prioritising health. “Men must overcome the façade of invincibility, seek regular check-ups, and express love freely,” he said.
The evening featured activities and prize giveaways led by Pilipasidis, culminating in the AGAPI Care International Men’s Day Mentor Awards.
