The Australian Hellenic Choir, a group of over 50 singers, will be handed the Multicultural Communities Award at the 2024 St George Community Awards.

This marks the choir’s first major accolade since its founding six years ago, recognising its significant contributions to cultural enrichment and community engagement.

The award they’re being recognised with specifically highlights the impact of multicultural organisations in fostering community cohesion and cultural appreciation.

Announcing the award, the Member for Oatley and Shadow Minister for Multiculturalism, Mark Coure, praised the choir’s dedication.

“The Multicultural Communities Award acknowledges groups that show a passion for the betterment of our community,” he said.

“It is my honour to present the Australian Hellenic Choir team with this award and congratulate them in person for their contributions to the St George area.”

James Tsolakis, President of the Australian Hellenic Choir, expressed his gratitude for the recognition.

“This is a huge honour for the Choir and acknowledges the efforts that each and every member makes to deliver high-quality multicultural musical events,” he said.

He added, “The Choir has cemented its place in the Greek diaspora history books as a leading organisation that promotes Hellenic culture and language through songs and music.”

Tsolakis highlighted the choir’s collaboration with local artists, including Music Director Leon Vitogiannis and pianist-composer Stefanos Maragkakis, who have contributed to the choir’s performances.

The award ceremony will take place on Friday, 29 November. Representing the choir will be James Tsolakis, Vice-President Despina Lucas, and Music Director Leon Vitogiannis.
