St John’s College Preston has flicked the switch on solar panels and is now one of the leading schools in the country for sustainable education.

The panels were ceremonially flicked on by Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew during his visit to Australia in October.

Renowned for his work in environmental advocacy, the patriarch has long championed global action to protect our planet, inspiring Orthodox Christians, world-wide faith leaders, environmental advocates, government leaders and others to embrace ecological responsibility as a moral and spiritual duty.

The school has 227 newly installed solar panels which will lower its carbon dioxide emissions by 131 tonnes per year.

This means St John’s now sources 90 per cent of its electricity from solar energy.

“St John’s College isn’t just flicking the switch, you are sparking a vision for a cleaner, more sustainable future……You are lighting the way and setting a powerful example for others to follow” said MP for Northcote Kat Theofanos in an announcement video.

“St John’s College is incredibly proud of our students and staff for embracing this vision and taking active steps toward a sustainable future,” the school said in a media release sent to Neos Kosmos.

“Students have been deeply inspired by the environmental work of the head of the Orthodox Church worldwide, the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew.”

The solar panel project is part of a broader commitment by St John’s to reduce its carbon footprint and serve as a model for other schools and organisations.
