Shock waves have rippled through Greece following another tragic case of femicide, this time in the Athenian suburb of Ampelokipi. The incident marks the 16th femicide in the country this year.
A 39-year-old man of Albanian origin called the police on Thursday evening, confessing that he had killed his wife the previous week. He admitted to striking her on the head with a hammer and hiding her body in the loft of their apartment.
Police arrived at the residence on Lakonias Street, where the suspect was waiting for them on the ground floor. He led them to the loft, where they found the body of the victim wrapped in blankets and plastic bags, concealed behind other stored items.
The stench in the apartment was overwhelming, as the body had been hidden for seven days, AMNA reported.
According to police reports, the suspect claimed he was “blinded by jealousy” and attacked his wife while their children were at school. He allegedly told authorities that he “lost control” after discovering she was having an affair with his best friend.
The couple had two children, aged 12 and 9. The suspect reportedly sent the children to stay at their grandmother’s house during the week following the murder.
Neighbours described the man as prone to conflicts, often engaging in arguments over parking spaces. His volatile behaviour had been a source of tension in the area.
Authorities are continuing their investigation into the case.
