A heavy rainy day in Melbourne didn’t stop people from gathering at Frankston Pier to take part in and witness the Blessing of the Waters.

While the gathering was not as large as it was in other places or had the weather been better, but a significant amount of faithful still showed up.

The rain had just stopped around 1pm for when the priests arrived at the pier.

Twelve boys and men were brave enough to dive into the water to retrieve the cross and it was Billi ‘Vasilli’ Mitsou who was successful in retrieving it.

“It was an amazing experience,” Mitsou told Neos Kosmos following his blessing.

“There was 10-15 of us wondering how far they’ll throw it and it went all the way to the end.

“I was with some of the boys ahead and just saw it and grabbed it.”

This was his first time diving in for the cross and second time attending a Blessing of the Waters event in person, having been to Rosebud last year.

Mitsou, who is from Clayton and had been waiting at the Frankston Pier since 11.30am, said he thinks he’ll do it again next year and the following years.

“It’s a great feeling, you never regret being part of something like this.”
