The Cretan communities of Australia and New Zealand honoured their heritage with the 43rd edition of their National Convention in Darwin, maintaining its cultural connection with a four-day celebration.
The Cretan Federation of Australia and New Zealand (CFANZ) hosted the convention from 2-5 January, drawing hundreds of attendees to Darwin both domestically and internationally.
The event was organised by the Cretan Association of Northern Territory, with the support of the Greek Orthodox Community of Northern Australia, as they celebrated their proud Cretan culture and traditions.
The convention notably featured renowned musicians from their ancestral region in Nikos Vezyrakis, Giorgios Katsoulieris, and Alexandros Kazakis, who delighted the attendees with their performances.
“The 43rd National Cretan Federation Convention in Darwin was a resounding success. We’re thrilled to have shared this unforgettable experience,” said CFANZ President Emmanuel Mountakis in a media release on the event.
The convention featured numerous initiatives across its four-day program, including: a wreath-laying ceremony, a youth night, the CFANZ AGM, the official opening Cocktail party, a youth sports day, traditional strata/kantada, as well as various official dinners.
The event featured numerous notable guests and officials from across Australia, as well as from Greece and the USA.
“It was truly heartwarming to witness the Cretan community from across Australia and New Zealand unite in celebration of our rich heritage,” Mountakis said.
“The infectious energy and enthusiasm of our youth, delegates and attendees created an electric atmosphere that pulsed throughout the convention.”
The CFANZ President extended his immense appreciation for the efforts made by all the organisations and sponsors in organising the convention, saying:
“Your selfless dedication, tireless efforts, and unwavering commitment to our community made this convention an unforgettable success.”
The CFANZ confirmed that the 44th National Convention next year will be held in Sydney.
