Maria Sakkari has failed to reach the quarterfinals at the Adelaide International after she was comfortably defeated by Jessica Pegula 6-4, 6-1.

The American’s powerful serve and aggressive baseline game was too much for the Greek.

Sakkari did start the match well, securing an early break and leading 2-0 but the first seed quickly took back control, improving her serve and exploiting Sakkari’s unforced errors to win five straight games.

Sakkari did manage to recover one break but it wasn’t to be, as Pegula closed the first set 6-4.

The second set saw Pegula dominate with Sakkari never looking comfortable against her.

The 29-year-old Sakkari had initially lost in the qualifiers to Peyton Stearns but entered the main draw as a Lucky Loser following last-minute withdrawals.

She had a solid first-round victory over Linda Noskova, but now her attention will switch to the Australian Open.
