Tennis star Stefanos Tsitsipas made the time to revisit the Greek Centre ahead of his Australian Open campaign, engaging with the Greek Community of Melbourne (GCM) and pledging to come back and meet its students.
Tsitsipas was warmly welcomed by GCM President Bill Papastergiadis, Vice President Michael Karamitos, Treasurer A/Prof Marinis Pirpiris, and Board Member Manuel Tsirmiris along with GCM staff.
While there, the former Australian Open finalist engaged in a deep discussion about his connection with Melbourne and the Greek community/
He shared his excitement to return to the city which he has developed a strong affinity for over the years and is home to many Greeks that come to cheer him year in and year out, saying “Their support and cheers from the sidelines give me strength”.

The tennis superstar vowed to return to Melbourne and see the students from the GCM schools, stressing the importance of language and education in helping keep the younger generations connected to their roots.
Papastergiadis was delighted the Greek tennis star made the time to visit the Greek Centre again, saying,
“We are thrilled that Stefanos and his team selected to use the Greek Community’s Centre for their media interviews and commitments.”
“The Greek Centre is a cultural landmark and beacon for Greeks from all over the world that we hope is welcoming to all. Stefanos was fantastic and his genuine interest in our schools’ program was well received by my Board colleagues and our staff.”
The GCM President added that despite Tsitsipas’ early exit at this year’s event, “he knows he has a second home at the Greek Community of Melbourne, and we hope to expand our relationship with him on our educational initiatives”.
Papastergiadis cited the Melbourne University Hellenic Global Diaspora Program as an example of something he hopes Tsitsipas involves himself with in the future.
