The Maria Callas Australian Society will officially launch on Sunday, 2 February in Melbourne, celebrating the legacy of the legendary Greek soprano who transformed opera.
The event will take place at Palace Cinema Como in South Yarra and will coincide with the Ithacan Historical Society’s fundraiser screening of Maria (2024), the highly anticipated biopic starring Angelina Jolie.
Soprano Christiana Aloneftis, who provides the voice of Maria Callas in the Netflix film, will join the event virtually as the society’s distinguished ambassador.
The event will feature a screening of Maria (2024), starring Angelina Jolie, with proceeds supporting Ithacan cultural heritage and archaeology. The evening will also mark the official launch of the Maria Callas Australian Society, with a special virtual appearance by Christiana Aloneftis. Tickets are available for $22 and can be booked at ithacanhistorical.org/store.
The Maria Callas Australian Society was founded in 2023 to mark the centenary of Callas’ birth. Led by Roma Siachos, the society brings together Greek-Australian opera enthusiasts to honour the enduring impact of Callas. It also aims to build cultural bridges between Greece and Australia, ensuring that Callas’ legacy remains a source of inspiration for future generations by organising events, supporting emerging opera talent, and fostering cultural exchange.
“Maria Callas was not just a singer—she was a transformative force in opera, elevating the art form with her technical brilliance and emotional depth,” the society stated in a press release sent to Neos Kosmos.
“Her legacy continues to inspire musicians and audiences worldwide.”
