The inaugural Greek Community Cup Women’s Tournament kicks off this Sunday, 2 February, at John Cain Memorial Park in Thornbury, bringing together top Greek Australian football clubs.

Organised by the Greek Community of Melbourne (GCM), this historic event highlights the growing presence of women in football and aims to inspire future generations.

Teams from Malvern City FC, Keon Park, Oakleigh Cannons FC, East Kew FC, Heidelberg United, Box Hill United FC, South Springvale FC, and Northcote City will battle it out while celebrating Community spirit.

A milestone for women’s football

The Greek Community Cup has long been a staple in Melbourne’s sporting calendar, fostering unity and cultural pride through football. This year’s introduction of a women’s tournament marks a significant step toward inclusivity and equal opportunities in the sport.

GCM Vice President Anthea Sidiropoulos expressed her pride in the event’s launch, stating, “I’m proud that the Greek community has initiated this tournament, creating new opportunities for women to compete. It’s fantastic to see our community embracing equality and supporting both women and men in sport.”

GCM Secretary Nick Koukouvitakis emphasized the importance of women’s participation in sports, adding, “Beyond fitness, football helps build lifelong friendships. Clubs like Northcote City play a crucial role in fostering these connections.”

Northcote FC: Honoured to host

Northcote FC, the host club, sees this as a momentous occasion. President Michalis Skliros reflected on the club’s journey, saying, “If our founders, 65 years ago, had imagined a dedicated women’s tournament, they might have laughed. Now, it’s a reality. It’s incredible to be part of this historic moment.”

Northcote FC Secretary Arthur Zygouris highlighted the club’s commitment to women’s football, stating, “Growing our women’s program has been a major focus for years, and hosting the Hellenic Community Greek Girls’ Cup is a fantastic milestone. This event is a great way to showcase our club and encourage more young girls to get involved.”

Bill Papastergiadis OAM, President of the Greek Community of Melbourne, underscored the broader significance of the tournament, noting, “The Greek Community Cup is more than just a competition; it is a celebration of our culture, our passion for sport, and the incredible talent of female footballers. Showcasing women athletes is vital in fostering inclusivity and inspiring future generations. This tournament ensures female footballers receive the recognition and opportunities they deserve.”
