I write to pay tribute to the late Sofia Mastoris, whose passing marks the end of an era—one defined by grassroots mobilisation and an unwavering dedication to the Greek community. As a proud Epirotisa and first-generation Greek migrant, Sofia served as Mayoress, using her extensive networks and resources to develop initiatives that celebrated Hellenic culture, fostered unity, and strengthened the Greek community.

In the face of adversity, Sofia never bowed. Throughout her many community roles, she encountered challenges but remained steadfast, always pushing forward.

We are reminded of Aristotle’s wisdom:

“There is only one way to avoid criticism: do nothing, say nothing, and be nothing.”

For over 30 years, I witnessed her determination firsthand. As former Mayor of the City of Whittlesea, I saw her drive—how she sought support, refused to back down, and pursued her goals with persistence.

Sofia Mastoris was a force—she did much, said plenty, and became well known. Despite personal loss and hardship, she emerged stronger, her struggles only fuelling her passion further.

I often admired her energy, her willingness to collaborate and create, and her love for floral beauty. In honour of her wishes, I will wear florals at her funeral tomorrow—a small tribute to a remarkable woman.

May she rest in peace, leaving behind an indelible legacy in our local community and beyond.

Sofia Mastoris will be remembered for her resilience, her passion for Hellenism, and her commitment to women’s health and wellbeing. Her effervescent spirit will not be forgotten.
