The Greek Community of Melbourne Schools marked International Greek Language Day with a series of educational activities, highlighting the language’s historical and cultural significance.

Established in 2017 and observed annually on February 9, the day honours poet Dionysios Solomos, who wrote the words to the Greek national anthem. It aims to highlight the Greek language as a cornerstone of global culture and encourage its preservation among younger generations.

Throughout the week, students and teachers engaged in themed lessons and assemblies across all campuses.

Teachers read selected quotes on the Greek language’s impact on world civilisation, while younger students created hats with the phrase “I am happy to be learning Greek.”

On February 4, Bentleigh campus students participated in an online discussion with renowned children’s author Vangelis Iliopoulos, who shared insights on the importance of the Greek language.

Meanwhile, City campus students attended Greek Sign Language lessons, fostering inclusivity and a broader understanding of linguistic diversity.
