Police are investigating a photo that allegedly shows a group of football fans performing a Nazi salute before a football match in North Geelong, Victoria.
Eleven men appeared in a photo, dressed in black and with their faces covered, performing the salute before a football match in western Melbourne.
The caption of the photo, which appeared online, claims that the men pictured were North Geelong Warriors fans.
“North Geelong Warriors fans before their away match on Saturday night,” the caption reads.
The North Geelong Warriors football club condemned the group’s actions in a statement on Tuesday, calling them “offensive” and “inappropriate.”
“The club has no direct connection with individuals or groups involved in such behaviour and does not support any action that promotes behaviours contrary to our values,” it stated.
“We are working closely with the Victorian Football Federation to address this issue and will take decisive action against anyone who defames the club and football in general.”
Police are investigating the case, confirmed from headquarters in Docklands.
“There is absolutely no place in our society for anti-Semitic, racist or hateful behaviour and such actions will not be tolerated,” the police spokesperson said.
In Victoria, it is illegal to display or perform Nazi symbols and gestures.
